Produced and bottled in Sagaponack, New York. Under Winemaker/Technical Director Roman Roth’s meticulous care, Wölffer Estate Vineyard encompasses 55 acres and practices sustainable agriculture. Similar in many respects to conditions in Bordeaux, the local Bridgehampton sandy loam soil, combined with the breezes from the Atlantic, only 2.6 miles away, provides the perfect conditions to achieve the ripeness and acidity necessary for producing Wölffer’s signature style: European elegance combined with the typicity of their Long Island terroir.
Grapes
47% Chardonnay, grown at Wölffer Estate Vineyard (Block 88, Davis Clone 3); 24% Riesling, 29% Gewürztraminer from Wagner Vineyards on the Eastern Shore of Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes region of New York.
Technical Data
The 2011 growing season, despite a brush with hurricane Irene, brought forth clean and elegant wines with good structure. We teamed up with one of the oldest Vineyards in the Finger Lakes to create this special blend.
The Gewürztraminer was picked on September 28th, the Riesling on October 5th and the Chardonnay on October 12th.
The grapes were pressed very gently, followed by a long and cold settling period of up to 5 days.
The 3 varieties were fermented to dryness separately in stainless steel tanks at cool temperatures and carefully racked and blended after an extensive trial period. Malolactic fermentation was completely avoided to keep the vibrancy and fruit forwardness.
After 2 months of lees contact, the wine was filtered, then bottled in late February, producing 1947 cases.
Winemaker’s Notes
Shiny light yellow in color with a slight green hue.
Aromas of fresh citrus, papaya, kiwi and hints of lychee fill the glass.
The mouth-feel is vibrant and refreshing, with great play between the fresh fruit and lively acidity. The finish is crisp and dry with great minerality. The three varieties seem to compete, each trying to outshine the other – the perfect blend.
